Description of the picture:

To war - Konstantin Apollonovich Savitsky. 1888. Oil on canvas. 207.5х303.5

The show of dramatic events of peasant life, the creation of large epic paintings, the emotional intensity of scenes are distinguished by the work of Savitsky, the master of complex multi-figure compositions. An important role in the realistic orientation of his art was played by his acquaintance with I. N. Kramsky, who had already taken part in his studies at the Academy of Arts, who had become an ideological mentor and friend of Savitsky.
Soon after the formation of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, Savitsky declared himself one of its most active members. In many respects, continuing the “Sixties” accusatory line, Savitsky at the same time strove to create positive peasant images. This important trend in the development of the art of critical realism of the 70s - 80s is reflected in the film “For War”. The idea of the painting was inspired by impressions related to the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. The artist worked on this huge canvas for almost ten years. The first version of the painting, which reached us in fragments, was completed in 1880, but it did not satisfy the master. Over the next eight years, Savitsky worked on the second version of the painting presented here.
Typical for the war years, the scene of the wires to the war interpreted as a national grief. The artist, first of all, sought to convey the mood of hopelessness, to show the feelings of the soldiers and those who were accompanying them to the moment of separation before sending the military echelon. Savitsky is building a composition, perhaps not without the influence of the painting "Morning of the Strelets Execution" by V. I. Surikov.
In the crowd there are several groups, in each of which the mental state of the characters is differently expressed. In the picture there is no single center, not a single group dominates, they are all internally interconnected, subordinated to the general idea and only in the aggregate reveal it completely. The artist conveys numerous shades of personal human experiences from the frenzied despair of a woman, separated from her husband, to the silent grief of an old woman, clinging to her son's chest. The image of this elderly, surrounded by family, harsh, restraining his feelings peasant has a convincing psychological characteristics. Among the recruits, a young soldier is particularly prominent, confused at last to his wife, who is tearing at him.
