Description of the picture:

Enoch - Konstantin Apollonovich Savitsky. 1897. Oil on canvas. 89 x 68 cm

It seems to be a clerical work, and it seems not - the painting "The Enoch" by Konstantin Savitsky is surprising and pushes for thinking.
Most of the canvas is occupied by the mighty figure of a monk in a black cassock. His elbow is on a thick bible, his right hand is wrapped in a rosary, on the window you can see willow branches that point us to Palm Sunday, and behind the back is an impressive cross. The usual situation in the cell where the monk should rest.
But is the hero of Savitsky's canvas calm? All his talk speaks of some unresolved issue, and his glance reflects a whole gamut of emotions - fatigue, gloom, thoughtfulness, disappointment ...
What does the monk think? It is believed that his thoughts take a heavy reflection on the correctness of his chosen path. A handsome, healthy man devoted his life to serving God, and now all his days will pass within the walls of the monastery, but is this what his soul wants?
It is known that as a sitter Savitsky invited a student of Penza Art School, which the artist headed until his death. Later, this young man will become a Social Revolutionary and in troubled times, the first Russian revolution will take up arms - shoot at the gendarme, head of the Penza gendarmes department. From this point of view it is difficult to disagree that Savitsky found the exact type of person who does not agree with the environment, is torn apart by contradictions and is ready to fight for good. The ideal sitter for writing a monk with a rebellious, doubting soul.
The picture is written mostly in dark colors. The color of the canvas includes black, gold, beige, brown. With special care, the artist wrote out the hints: a willow on the window (a hint of Palm Sunday), a bible under the elbow, a rosary, a tense hand clenched into a fist, which speaks of the rage of resistance.
In 2012, the Russian Orthodox Church instructed Wikipedia (the Russian version) to exclude several works by Konstantin Savitsky, including the Enoch from the site’s gallery, as anti-clerical.
