Description of the picture:

Portrait of the artist N. N. Ge - Nikolai Aleksandrovich Yaroshenko. 1890. Oil on canvas. 92.5x73.5

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Yaroshenko (1848-1896) is one of the main participants of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. Having secured the fame of the portrait painter, Yaroshenko created the “era in faces” - these are the types of raznochintsa student, girl student, fireman, and the marked circle of prominent personalities of the second half of the XlX century - L. N. Tolstoy, actress P. BUT . Strepetova, artist I. N. Kramskoy and many others.
In 1890, Yaroshenko painted the portrait of his comrade in association - painter Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge. The identity of this artist attracted contemporaries, many considered him an absurd old man, retired on his Ukrainian farm since the 1870s and lived by strange religious beliefs. Someone, on the contrary, found in him a spark of a lively mind and a talent of oratory, an ability to read lectures on art in a fascinating way. Creativity Ge also found no consensus. Dedicating the last two decades of the life of the life and death of Christ that tormented him, Ghe has performed countless paintings and graphic works with gospel stories. The subject of crucifixion that took hold of the artist will become central to his co-philosophical understanding of the Christian faith. Worn out by the daily, persistent work on the creation of paintings "The Court of the Sanhedrin", "Judas (Conscience)", "Coming Out With the Last Supper" and others, Ge painfully experienced the rejection and lack of understanding of his work by the public, the prohibition of his paintings to be shown at exhibitions.
Yaroshenko portrayed the artist shortly before his death. The wise glance of the old man, the God-seeker, the unrecognized genius as if inquires from the viewer: “What is truth?”, Echoing the hero of his canvas standing in the background.
