Description of the picture:

Kiss - Gustav Klimt. 1907-1908. Canvas, oil. 180x180 cm

The most famous work of Gustav Klimt - the painting "Kiss", written in the "golden" period of his work. The names of the period are associated not only with the highest flowering of the painter, but mainly with the coloristic features of the style, the master widely began to use the gold color of both the paint itself and the real gold leaf in its works.
Up to this time, the kissing motif has already “flashed” in the work of Klimt, but in this work he reached his apogee. The author treats the kiss as a symbol that demonstrates the unity of a man and a woman, a masculine and a feminine.
Today, researchers believe that the artist himself and his beloved Emilia Flege, with whom the eternal bachelor Klimt had a long, difficult relationship, were the models for this world-famous painting. It was her name that he uttered, slain by a stroke, and that was his last word.

The Legend of the picture "Kiss"

However, there is another story of writing, which can be safely attributed to the legend. In fairness, remember her. A certain graph ordered a painting from the artist, where he would have been imprinted with his beloved in a passionate kiss. He also gave Klimt a medallion with a portrait of his beloved. The artist set to work, and soon was able to provide it for the court count. The canvas was incredibly liked by the count, but he could not refrain from asking why in the picture their lips never joined in a kiss. Klimt parried - he wanted to portray the atmosphere of desire and passion, which is about to push his loved ones in his arms. The picture was loved by both the customer and his beloved. Soon they were leaving for a honeymoon trip. Some biographers recall that later Klimt allegedly revealed the secret of this “under-kissing” - while working with the medallion, the artist himself fell in love with a young girl, and the unfinished kiss was a little revenge caused by jealousy towards the successful graph.
It is no coincidence that "The Kiss" became the most famous work of the artist, because the picture concentrated all the main symbolic elements of the composition, characteristic of the master's handwriting. We meet the flower meadows in the landscape works of the author, the complex whimsical ornament is the leitmotif of the overwhelming number of mature works, and the gilt of Klimt was especially carried away in the last years of his creative work.

Description of the picture of Gustav Klimt "Kiss"

On the edge of a rock dotted with small flowers, two lovers stand, bathing in the areola of their erotic happiness. For them, the world stopped, cringing to the size of this flower ledge, where they indulge in an intimate moment. Golden robes merge them into a single figure, and only the difference of the patterns allows you to visually separate one figure from another.
A man has a pronounced dominant function - he towers over his beloved, at the same time protecting and dominating. The kneeling position of the girl shows us a subordinate state, although the man himself is also kneeling.
Despite the intimacy of the moment, the viewer does not have the sensation of spying - the characters do not hide from anyone. Their image is characterized by some kind of uncontrollable simple mortal cosmic state, where only they exist, immersed in each other.
The picture was accepted by the public with great enthusiasm, and bought before the end of the first exhibition. Today it is located in Vienna, and besides the Belvedere Gallery you can see it ... everywhere. The delightful "Kiss" looks at you from the windows in the form of reproductions, finds itself in the hands in the form of postcards, decorates all the souvenir shops and printed materials, pursues and fascinates with its magical magnificence.
Russia also could not resist the brilliance of this work, and today the Klimtovsky Kiss is reminiscent of the sculptural compositions in Oranienbaum and on the Elagin Island in St. Petersburg.
