Description of the picture:
Houses under snow in silver rain with a red carpet - Friedensreich Hundertwasser. 1962. Watercolor. 68 x 51 cm
The artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser painted his picture "Houses under snow in silver rain with a red carpet" in 1962. This time was very favorable for the Austrian dreamer and storyteller - he married a second time. This time, his chosen one was the beautiful Japanese woman Yuko Ikevade, with whom he met during his exhibition in Tokyo.
The title of the work describes almost all the main elements of the exhibition. We see six multi-colored houses, whose roofs have merged together, forming a common summit led away to the left. The rich red color of the roof echoes the continuous red stripe, which the master himself presents as a walkway. I immediately recall the famous performance that Hundertwasser had spent in Hamburg two years earlier - the artist, along with two friends, drew a continuous line in the room for several days, until they were interrupted by the authorities, outraged by such an eccentric act.
Everything shown in the picture resembles a bright mosaic - the colors are so saturated and the details are sketchy. Yellow clearly traced the fence rounds most of the picture. As a result, it turns out that at the point of the golden section there is only a white crust of snow and nothing more. This is an original approach to building a composition.
Silver rain is represented in the picture in the form of large round objects more like drops, not stones, but stones. The author unevenly distributed them in the picture. In the background there is a schematic - a river forged with gray ice.
Everything in this work raises many questions - why do the roofs merge, why is the central part of the work given to the space covered with snow, why is the path so carelessly drawn, violating all the laws of perspective, and finally, what does its red color mean?
However, to all these reasonable comments, the original Hundertwasser would answer simply: why not? This artist has always called for the complete freedom of the artist and his work, and worked as he felt, becoming an inexhaustible source of ideas for representatives of avant-garde trends in painting.
