Description of the picture:

Cathedral I - Friedensreich Hundertwasser. 1951. Watercolor. 67 x 50 cm

As you know, Friedensreich Hundertwasser has traveled a lot in his life. He did not trust textbooks and manuals, so he believed that the world was better studied in practice. In his travels, he also saw a source of inspiration and regarded travel as a fascinating way to his style in art. Wherever the artist went, he studied the architecture around everywhere, and was often unpleasantly surprised by its monotony.
At the beginning of the 1950s, Hundertwasser visited Morocco, where he visited one of the largest imperial cities in the country - Marrakesh. There, the architect was struck by one of the local attractions, the house of Ahmed Alau. The artist left his vision of this architectural object. Of course, photographic accuracy with a real structure should not even begin to search - Hundertwasser saw everything through the prism of his worldview.
And the central element in the perception of the surrounding world was color. One of the artistic and architectural principles of the artist says that people should not live in the same houses and should be given the right to paint and decorate their home as they please. Walking along Marrakesh, Friedensreich was amazed by the combination of colors - red soil, walls of red earth, tiles of green colored ceramics. The artist compared the house of Ahmed Alaoui with the Vienna Cathedral of St. Stephen. Hence the unexpected name of the painting - "Cathedral I".
We see how many colors in this work! No halftones, just bright pure colors. Due to the deliberate flatness of the picture, the simplified construction of the composition, and bright colors, the picture is not just another artifact of easel painting, but a strange mosaic made of stones and glass (the roof of the building, which is composed of glass elements, attracts attention).
Hundertwasser was an opponent of classical forms and typical elements. He not only sought to transform everything around, but he saw everything a little differently. The painting "The Cathedral" allows you to look at the world through the eyes of one of the most outrageous architects of the past century. And this is its main value.
