On May 12, 1830, a boy was born in the house of Zamoskvoretsky merchant Savrasov, who was baptized in honor of St. Alexy, the Moscow wonderworker, Alexey. From early childhood, the son of the merchant Savrasov most of all loved to draw. When the boy was 12 years old, his drawings were quickly bought up in the trading places of Moscow. At first, his father regarded his son's studies as a manifestation of commercial talent and was very pleased. However, when the son announced his intention to enroll in an art school, the family was strongly opposed. It came to the point that Alexey was "deprived of the table" and "driven into the attic." The study had to be interrupted under the specious pretext of the "illness of the mother." Only the personal intervention of the Moscow police chief, teachers of the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture, allowed the boy to continue his studies.
Already in 1848, Savrasov was noted as the author of the best student sketches. In 1849, Savrasov was sent to Ukraine to paint landscapes.
