  • Year of birth: February 26, 1808
  • Date of death: February 10, 1879
  • A country: France

In the 19th century, the son of the glazier could not count on a smart career. However, three revolutions of the last century and not such people were thrown to the very top of political and cultural life. Paris is a great city that loves the fortunate and stubborn and repels the untalented and arrogant.
Daumier was eight years old when his family moved from the south of France to the capital. The provincial boy had a huge number of temptations and the most interesting things in life. Lost all day in the yard, Honore learned to steal buns in the bakery, tease prostitutes at the corner of the quarter, watch the life of Paris gateways for hours ... Very soon Daomier’s father realized that his son needed to be taught the craft urgently, otherwise nothing good would come of him.
Surprisingly, Honore was a bad student. He was absolutely not interested in his father's craft and he did not want to become a glazier categorically. The casual acquaintance of Papa Daumier (he inserted new windows for one law office) allowed Honore to be attached to a lawyer by a messenger. The smart teenager did an excellent job, he even had time to visit the bookshop, there he avidly looked at albums with reproductions of great Italian artists.
Gradually, there was less and less time to carry out their courier duties. The lawyer did not tolerate the "frills" of the young Daumier - expelled. But the future cartoonist did not long survive. The next day he got a job as a clerk in a bookstore. His favorite artists have become closer ...
Since childhood, Daumier loved to draw cartoons for everyone. Sometimes he fell from older boys, but already then he understood that his “models” were angry because the image was too “realistic” ...
The sociable, lively and somewhat cheeky character of Honore allowed him to quickly find friends among the most famous masters of Paris. He met Corot, Delacroix, Granville. When the drawings of young Daumier saw Balzac, there was no end to the delight: "Michelangelo lives in this guy!"
Daumier did not become a painter. His element - drawing, engraving, lithography. A favorite genre is caricature. In 1832, for a caricature of the king, bright, accurate, caustic, Daumier receives 6 months in prison. It turns out happy and famous from there ... Now he is invited to cooperate with all satirical magazines.
For about half a century, Daumier painted caricatures. Parisians waited for his work, laughed, rejoiced, admired, but ... No one knew him. Well, who will read the artist's signature under the caricature. Daumier artists knew, and very respected him. A great artist, he turned every work into a true work of art. Possessing a keen eye, a unique manner, the ability to understand people, a clear civil tradition and fearlessness of the Gascon, Honore Daumier created caricatures of the Parisians who raised the revolution in 1830, 1848, and 1871.
The caricatures of the great master did not require any signatures. Anyone could recognize the characters of the artist prototypes. The lean women became an allegorical depiction of famine, the fat butchers - fed royalists.
The revolutionary time is a golden time for cartoonists. But revolutions pass, and satirists remain out of work ... So it happened with Daumier. Unable to save up for a comfortable life, Daumier, in his old age, was left completely alone. Blindness was added to everything ... Life could have ended tragically. Helped friends. Camille Corot rented a house for Domier and hired a carer ... It was surprising that even when he was almost completely blind, Daumier continued to draw. In another way, he could not.
One of the most famous works of Daumier is Don Quixote. The Spanish knight of the Sad image, at war with windmills and faithfully believing in the truth ... Honore Daumier will remain so in the history of world art.
